Intense Algal Bloom in The Baltic Sea - Sweden

Handout photo dated on July 21, 2025, shows Each summer, parts of the Baltic Sea display vivid green algal blooms, triggered by sunlight, high temperatures, and abundant nutrients. This image, acquired by a Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite on 21 July 2025, shows widespread algal blooms off the coast of Sweden. The first signs of this event appeared in early July and have steadily intensified, fed by nutrient-rich runoff and a prolonged heatwave. These types of events can impact the health of local marine life and coastal ecosystems. The Copernicus Sentinel satellites and services provide essential data for monitoring algal blooms across the world. In particular, the Copernicus Marine Service delivers a range of products useful for better understanding the biogeochemical status of the ocean.
